Health & Sanitation

RDTA is actively working for the promotion of public health in the following thematic areas:

Improved child and maternal health
RDTA is contributing for the promotion of maternal and child health through the mobilization of Female Community Health Volunteer (FCHV). It provides training to FCHV to identify the signs danger during the pregnancy, care of new borne child etc. These trained volunteers are mobilized in the community to achieve safe maternity.

Khopachangu Area Health Post, though has authority of child delivery, was lacking sufficient human resource for the purpose. RDTA and CWIN-Nepal ( jointly provided trained midwife to assist the health post in charge. Now this health post is providing twenty four hour child delivery services. Khopachangu Area Health Post is the catchment for six VDCs of the Northern Dolakha.

Infrastructural development
RDTA with CWIN-Nepal constructed health post buildings of Aalampu VDC in Dolakha District. These organizations have aimed of helping the construction of the health post building of Bigu VDC next year.
Health post is providing good health facility to the people the best of their possibility. But however due to the lack of equipments and other tools the delivery of the services had not been to the level of expectation. To assist these health post delivering the best facility, the organization supported bed, strature, cupboard, furniture................... the organization is hoping to make such assistance regularly in order to improve the health condition of the region.
It has also constructed toilet in the health post of Chilankha VDC. The work will be continued in the coming year based on the need and demand of the community.

Providing safe drinking water facilities

Many of the villages in the Dolakha district still do not have piped drinking water system. Their water sources are open and so is its delivery. This has increased the risk of the spread of the water borne diseases. To help people get out of this problem, RDTA is constructing new Drinking Water System (DWS) and helping for the maintenance and renovation of the old DWS.
RDTA is helping for the protection and conservation of water source through fencing, source cleaning and plantation in the catchment of the source.

RDTA has its own guidelines, terms and conditions that the user's group should be abide by. For example, the pipe line must be dug out one meter deep before the delivery of the water pipe, so is the condition for the construction of the reservoir. This terms and condition has given the RDTA's construction as most sustainable in the District.

Anti alcohol campaign (Alcohol Drug and Development)
RDTA launches anti alcohol campaign in the form of pressure group, street drama, social mobilization and REFLECT class. Resource persons are mobilized. RDTA integrates its local level anti alcohol activity to hit the national policy through collaboration with Nepal Alcohol Policy Alliance (NAPA). It runs its anti alcohol activity in coordination with CWIN-Nepal.
The activities done against alcohol have been highly effective. The effect of street drama has been widely appreciative. Local groups have announced the limit of alcohol consumption even for the Matuwali (liquor drinking groups) during different ceremonies. (Read the case study)
Anti alcohol activities has helped to enhance the public health by reducing the domestic violence. The money that was spent in a large amount in liquor is now being spent in familial matter. Though alcohol consumption could not be eliminated, the big achievement we gained is the reduction in consumption. RDTA does not have exact data for the rate of consumption, yet local people claims that the rate of consumption has been reduced by more than half.

Health post planning
RDTA facilitate the process of health planning for Health Posts to achieve the common goal set by the health posts. In the Northern part of Dolakha, the organization along with CWIN-Nepal has formed health network. The plan is common for all the health posts. This is done through planning workshop organized in the RDTA office Charikot. The network also sits for periodic meeting and discusses on the common health problems and finds the way out. RDTA facilitate the meeting and finding appropriate solution.

Health Education and Networking:
RDTA conducts adolescence health education for the youths in collaboration with CWIN-Nepal. The trained youths have been organized to form groups. These groups are working actively to fight the social perversion like alcoholism, smoking, molestation and harassment etc.
